PEX is the short form of cross linked polyethylene which is used in PEX plumbing. PEX plumbing is used for hydronic radiant heating systems, domestic water pipes and for insulation in electrical cables while it is being extensively used for natural gas, transportation of slurries, offshore oil application and chemical transportation.
The sizes of PEX tubing ranges from ¼” to 4” amongst which the most commonly used are ½”, 1”, and ¾”. It has captured market due to its numerous advantages which are as follows:
- It requires lesser fittings as there are less leakage and breakage points.
- This is highly flexible and can bent into a radius of 5” for ½’ pipe and 4 inch for 3/8” pipe.
- It can be used for both hot and cold water supply and can be made adjustable for copper and PVC.
- Due to its flexibility it can easily contract and expand even in extreme climatic conditions and has least chances of bursting.
- PEX tubing comes with a repair set and all types of fittings such as shutoffs, elbows etc. are included in it.
Apart from all these features the installation of PEX tubing is also simple and handy and is done in two ways as Compression and Insertion. These fittings come in different colors and sizes and its most distinct feature is its durability which is many times greater than the pipes made from plastic, copper, iron and lead.
